Before letters: the nine strokes that come first

A child cannot write an A until their hand can make a diagonal. There is an order to this, it is well documented, and it explains a lot of frustration.

Most people teaching a small child to write start with letters, usually the ones in their name. It is the obvious place to start and it is one step too far up the ladder.

Letters are not primitives. They are assemblies, built out of a much smaller set of strokes, and a hand acquires those strokes in a fairly consistent order over roughly three years. A child who cannot yet copy a cross is not going to produce a recognisable letter t, and no amount of practising t will change that — the missing piece is the cross, not the letter.

The nine strokes, in the order they arrive

Occupational therapists generally work from this sequence. The strokes get harder in a specific way: single straight lines first, then curves, then combinations, then anything diagonal.

Ages are the point at which roughly half of children can do it — the 50th percentile, not a deadline. A child six months either side of these is unremarkable.

Imitating comes before copying

There is a second ladder running alongside the first, and it matters more than most parents realise. There are three distinct things a child can be asked to do with a shape, and they are not equally hard.

The easiest is to watch you draw it and then draw it — imitation. Harder is to be shown a finished shape and reproduce it without having seen it drawn — copying. Hardest is to produce it from memory on request. A child will typically imitate a shape months before they can copy one.

This is why "here, watch me" works so much better than pointing at a printed example. If a child is stuck, the fix is usually not more attempts; it is showing them the stroke being made, slowly, one more time.

Why the diagonals are last

The diagonals, the X and the triangle sit at the end of the list for a reason that has little to do with fingers. Drawing a line that runs from upper-left to lower-right means moving a hand across the centre line of the body — crossing the midline — and coordinating both sides of the body together.

A vertical line can be drawn entirely on one side. A diagonal cannot. That is a whole-body coordination question wearing a pencil-shaped disguise, and it is why children who are otherwise drawing confidently can stall hard on A, K and V.

The triangle is the final boss: three lines, three corners that each require stopping and changing direction, and two of the three lines are diagonals. A child who can copy a triangle has, in practice, assembled everything the alphabet needs.

What a screen can and cannot do here

We build a tracing app, so we have an interest here, and the honest answer is that a finger on glass is not a pencil on paper and does not pretend to be.

Glass has no resistance. It does not require grip strength, it does not need pressure control, and a finger is not a tripod grasp. If a child only ever traces on a screen, the physical half of handwriting is not being built.

What a screen genuinely does well is the other half. It can enforce direction and sequence — starting at the top, going the right way round a circle — and correct instantly and without judgement. It never runs out of paper, so a child can do a stroke thirty times in a sitting. It removes the fear of spoiling the page, which for some children is the entire blocker. And it can hold attention long enough for the repetitions to accumulate.

Used together they divide the work sensibly: the screen for sequence, direction and volume; paper and a fat crayon for the hand itself. Used alone, the screen does about half the job.

Things that build these strokes without looking like practice

Almost everything on this list is better than a worksheet, because none of it can be failed.

  • Draw big and vertical. A whiteboard or paper taped to a wall puts the wrist in a stronger position and uses the shoulder. Small, flat and fiddly is the hardest configuration, and it is the one worksheets default to.
  • Break things with the fingers. Tearing paper, popping bubble wrap, using tongs, playing with stiff dough. Grip strength is upstream of everything here and none of it involves a pencil.
  • Trace in things that are not ink. A finger through sand, flour, shaving foam or condensation on a window. Same stroke, no fear of ruining it.
  • Use short crayons. A broken crayon stub is too small to fist. It quietly forces the finger grip that a full-length pencil lets a child avoid.
  • Let the shape be for something. A cross is more interesting when it is a kite string or a window. Our tracing pages are shapes, roads and faces for exactly this reason — the stroke arrives attached to a thing worth making.

One last thing about the ages

Every number above is a median. Half of all children arrive later than the figure next to each stroke, and those children are not behind — they are the other half of the distribution.

The sequence is far more useful than the timetable. If the strokes are arriving in roughly this order, the system is working. If a child is a long way off across the board, or losing a skill they previously had, that is a conversation for a paediatrician or an occupational therapist rather than for more practice at home.
