Yumbo troubleshooting

Feeding Yumbo a card

Tap the top card, or slide it up into Yumbo's mouth and let go. A quick tap always feeds; a slow, hesitant lift drops the card back into the fan so nothing happens by accident. On a word screen, tap the little robot at the top right to go back to the deck, or tap one of the three peek cards at the bottom to jump straight to that word.

Hearing a word again, or saying it back

On a word screen the round arrow button says the word again. The big microphone button starts a short say-it-back moment: the screen ripples for a few seconds while the child says the word, then Yumbo cheers with it. Nothing is recorded, so there is no microphone permission to grant.

Choosing a set of words

On the home screen, the strip of little faces above the cards picks a set: all words, pets, wild animals, water, bugs, things that go, food, home, clothes, body, outside, toys or make believe. Tapping one deals a fresh hand from that set. A free copy plays thirteen words, one from every set, and shows the twelve sets with a small padlock; tapping a padlocked one opens the parental gate rather than the set. Once all thirteen have been played, an Unlock everything button stays at the top of the home screen for a grown-up. Yumbo always reopens on all the words you have, so a child cannot get stuck in a small set.

No sound, or too much sound

Yumbo plays even when the ring switch is set to silent, so check the volume buttons first. There is no mute inside Yumbo: the volume buttons set how loud he is, and the tune, the voice and every sound follow them together. Sound pauses during a phone call and resumes afterwards.

Yumbo on iPad

Yumbo runs full screen on iPad in portrait and does not rotate, split or shrink into a floating window, so a small hand cannot lose the app. The layout is drawn for the bigger screen rather than stretched from the phone.

Unlocking all 214 words, or restoring a purchase

Tap the small padlock in the top left corner of the home screen (once all thirteen free words have been played it reads Unlock everything), then pass the parental gate: it names three numbers in words, so tap those three digits in order. From there you can choose a plan to open all 214 words, or tap Restore a purchase if you have bought Yumbo Plus before on the same Apple Account. Subscriptions are cancelled in iOS Settings, under your Apple Account and then Subscriptions, rather than inside Yumbo.

Billing and purchases

Yumbo is free to download and thirteen words are free to play forever. Yumbo Plus opens all 214. Plans and prices are shown inside the app behind a parental gate, never on a child's screen, and Apple sells and bills them through the App Store. Manage or cancel a subscription in iOS Settings > Apple Account > Subscriptions. One purchase covers your Family Sharing group. Synap1e never sees your payment details, and Apple handles refunds.
